Barnum UK Tour - Review!

I attended the press night for the UK tour of 'Barnum' at the New Wimbledon Theatre last night and I had such high expectations going in. The show did not live up to them.

The entire cast was so talented, and are not at fault for my lack of enjoyment of this show. In fact, I must credit the ensemble as they were one of only parts of the show that didn't stop me from zoning out completely. Their versatility in playing instruments whilst dancing and acting was so impressive! The circus tricks were also good.

I found that it was particularly difficult to understand what was being said by certain characters, as well as the lyrics in most group numbers. I think the entire show just felt very mediocre. The set and lead up to certain moments had built it up to be spectacular, which then did not occur. It all felt a bit forced and out of place, for example, there was a rather sad number being sang, and all of a sudden 5 people come out and start juggling in the back? I was so confused.

I think it was missing the big fun group numbers that a show of this nature could have had, it would have perfectly utilised all of the talent of the cast and provided an upbeat change of pace for the audience. Every song felt like it lasted for hours and they got so repetitive. I don't think there was a single moment in which I was engaged in what was going on.

The standout of the show for me was Penny Ashmore who played Jenny Lind, what a talent! She was en pointe, playing the harp and singing opera! I was in awe at her various abilities all of which she had perfected. She truly shone.

Additionally, I need to mention Monique Young who played charity as she brought such a refreshing character onto the stage and you can truly see in her performance that she truly enjoys what she is doing, and that radiates in her performance and made her a pleasure to watch as an actress.

I truly wish I could speak more positively on this show, but I do feel the show was rather anticlimactic, and Im not sure I would recommend.
