Don Black's "From The Heart" Review

I missed the press night for this show but was lucky enough to catch it before the end of its run at the Garrick Theatre. This show was an exquisite cabaret celebrating the beautiful songs written by Don Black.
I wasnt familiar with the name Don Black before going in, but of course I recognised a few of his songs, such as Diamonds are Forever and Sunset Boulevard. I also loved discovering so many new songs which I know I will be adding to my playlist to belt out in my room. There were plenty of Don Black fans in the audience, some of which even shouted "Legend" when he came on stage after the show (perfectly valid response) but even going in as a non-fan (to which I am now converted otherwise) you grow to have such a strong appreciation for his work. When the songs are delivered in such a strong way by the cast, you cannot help but be in awe at everything that is going on on stage.

The show features an insightful voiceover from Don Black explaining his motives behind writing each song and how every single one he wrote was dedicated to his wife.
The show was beautiful in its entirety and such a gorgeous way to commemorate the music he has written as well as the motives behind it.
I have to mention the star studded cast because every single song they performed simply got better and better. Each song was its own mini story that drew in the entire audience and the storytelling behind every single one was perfectly done. I was engaged the entire time and the show did not fall flat for even a second. Frances Mayli McCan was genuinely breathtaking in her performance and her vocals are so beautiful. She gave such a raw performance and I was in awe every time she graced us with her vocals. Shona McGarty gave a stellar performance delivering each song with such sass and truly commanding the stage with every word she sang. Clive Rowe was hilarious and
Micheal D. Xavier's voice is like butter and oh my gosh when he sang sunset boulevard that performance stood out to me so much! Last but not least in this cast was the wonderful Caroline O'Connor who was hilarious in all of her performances whilst simultaneously acing every single note she sang.

Each performance of this show has a surprise guest, we were graced with the presence of Marti Webb who has actually had a Don Black musical written specifically for her in the past!
Overall this show was a performance full of impact and such a refreshing and enjoyable watch. Would recommend to anyone looking for a night of listening to beautiful songs along with an insanely talented cast.
Unfortunately this show does close tonight, but I am manifesting a return to the west end for it as soon as possible!
