I was super fortunate to have been invited to see a preview of “I call this one…Purple rain” at the Etcetera Theatre in Camden.
Rebecca Johnson played Rapunzel and perfectly encapsulated the naivety and innocence of her character, which allowed the audience to have an insight into the playfulness in Rapunzels mind. She brought joy and life to the stage which was very refreshing to see.
The performance itself lasted about 45 minutes, which I thought was an adequate length considering it is a monologue solo performance.
“’I Call This One… Purple Rain” is a bold, heartfelt reimagining of the Rapunzel myth – where the long-lost prince isn’t a knight in shinning armour, but the Purple One himself Prince Rogers Nelson.”
The storytelling was great and I particularly enjoyed the storyline about her hair journey and the difficulty in finding somebody to correctly style her hair.
Overall I was engaged in the story of the show but I would have loved to have known how she managed to escape as the performance builds up on how she longs to be free, and ends with “that’s a story for another day”, which left me wondering how she escaped.
